To fully understand Japanese rope bondage (shibari/kinbaku), you need to understand the history and cultural context that it originated in.
Being a resource scarce country Japan has had a long history of rope use, from its significance in the Shinto religion through to it’s use in the martial art hojōjutsu used by the Samurai to restrain prisoners. Even to this day rope and the binding of objects is common in modern Japan.
